Somehow I imagine Penn might have handled it better, perhaps even creatively. What's more, he actually has a gig outside of radio, unlike Imus and Opie and Anthony. Thus, he would have been able to consider strategies that others couldn't. He mentioned very often that the sincere willingness to suddenly walk away gives one great power.
Though, on the other hand, if he had made some mistake on the air, and some Sharptonesque magnate had made him grovel like Imus, he might have lost the respect of much of his true fan base. I can't imagine how it would happen, but I also can't pretend such things aren't possible.
I do know that nobody could have predicted the Imus shitstorm, so that's probably not why Penn left. The reasons given on this site's front page seem plausible enough. If any censorship entered into it, it's probably the chunks they took out of the climax of the blow-dryer story.
