Re:'Penn Says' Exclusive New Unscripted Web Series - 2008/01/11 14:01 Go check out the official P&T site - there's a new Road Penn up where he talks a bit more about it.

In a nut shell, he'll be posting new vlogs four times a week.

For a while, anyway. That shit'll get old soon. Unless he's under contract with Sony, he probably won't keep this up for very long.

I'm thinking he'd have to be under some sort of contract, though. They gave him cameras and a place to post stuff.

If he really wanted to just say whatever he thought, he could easily reach a broader audience on YouTube.

Yeah, I can't disagree with that. And I imagine you're right about him being under contract. Nothing wrong with Penn making money.

That being said, a replacement for Penn Radio? Oh, please. And being repeatedly told that this is what it's supposed to be, after all the teases and hints that a replacement was coming ... well, let's just say it's not helping.

Re:'Penn Says' Exclusive New Unscripted Web Series - 2008/01/11 21:13 The theme music is a bit of a tribute to "pull of the weasel". Sure would like a downloadable audio program, however.

Not sure if there's a way to download the vids for viewing on your ipod, psp, or pda. However, here's what I do.

Get the firefox add on download helper:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006

This lets you download the .flv (flash video format).

Then get the YouTube Download utility

http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/

This lets you convert the flash video to a video format you can use on your portable media device.

Maybe there's an easier way.

I think you can also use the Youtube utility to convert it into just the mp3 audio. There hasn't been much that's visually interesting beyond getting to see Penn and his backyard. So if you don't have a portable media player, you can go that route.

I don't know if this particular video will work on this, but you can try:
keepvid.com
download the .flv
Then you got to:
media-convert.com
Save the .flv as almost any file type you want. I think you can make it just an mp3 there as well.

I don't like FireFox. I know this will work for IE.

Re:'Penn Says' Exclusive New Unscripted Web Series - 2008/01/12 23:21 I just listened to a few episodes. Video quality is great, if I ever am in the market for an HD camcorder I just might look at the Sonys (or not - that thing dearly needs a windscreen).

Listening to Penn just rant for four minutes is somewhat less interesting though. This is nowhere near as good as Penn Radio was. I dearly miss the interaction with Goudeau, Happy Jack, the callers (most of them) and so on. I enjoyed Penn there also, of course; it seems he is much better off with a supporting cast. This format is interesting, but there's no chance of the spontanaity of LaySurgeon Goudeau, Pull of the Weasel, "They're So Much Like Us" and all of the other memes of the radio show.

Maybe it's simply the fact that I agree with probably less than 20% of what he says. Perhaps it's simply that Penn rambling about whatever topic is in the news is too much like Garrison Keillor's "Hometown Democrat"[1] or any Rush Limbaugh show.

Maybe as this program matures it'll improve, but I rather suspect that Penn will just get bored and quit doing it.

Oh well. Time to listen to my Penn Radio collection again for the 3rd time ...

ken

[1] Bought the audiobook version to listen to while I drive. I made it most of the way through disk 1 when I realized GK had *no* point whatsoever to his rantings, and threw the whole mess away. There's $30 and an hour of my life wasted...

Not if he is under contract and getting paid.

Well if Penn has his people to tell him what to do, they would tell him not to stand in the bloody wind. Shitty sound, shitty hair all over the face....

Re:'Penn Says' Exclusive New Unscripted Web Series - 2008/01/14 04:59 This isn’t anywhere near a proper replacement for Penn Radio. You’re not going to get a “He’s like wheat” joke from this…

Maybe if we all uploaded “reply” videos saying that we really really really want Penn Radio back?

If you want this to die too, this is the way to do it. Believe it or not, Sony will use fan site's feedback as a benchmark whether their projects should continue or not. It is disappointing that Penn Radio is gone, but that choice was made by Penn for good reasons. No, this is not a replacement for Penn Radio, and it may be dishonest that they billed it that way, but I like this. I'll take Penn's opinions in any form that he deems worthy of putting them out there. Maybe in the far future, when Penn has more time, we'll get Penn Radio back in some form or another... but for now I'm glad we have this little window into his opinion.

Re:'Penn Says' Exclusive New Unscripted Web Series - 2008/01/14 11:21 While Penn's opinions are often wacky and far-out, the lack of immediate viewer feedback (so far) sort of lays bare how incomplete they often are. His opinions usually make more sense and are better informed when he steals them from his audience.

Maybe he just needs to grow into the unscripted solo vignette format.

Was he not under contract for PennRadio? I thought I read here somewhere it was to be a 2-year run...

I'm sure though that an entertainer of Penn's stature would never dream of signing a contract without a unilateral I-can-quit-if-I-want-to clause, so I'm sure he never would have *violated* the contract.

Re:'Penn Says' Exclusive New Unscripted Web Series - 2008/01/17 04:24 I hope I'm not being an idiot, but I assume most of us started posting on Pennfans because of the radio show, so of course we miss it.

What about people who start posting because of Penn Says? When PS kicks the bucket every fan of Penn from that generation is going to complain about his next non PnT project saying it isn't as good as Penn Says.

Why don't we just chill out and take what he's got. So far, Penn Says has been great, and I expect it to continue being great until he drops it.

And maybe they'll be right.

Why don't we just each voice our own opinions about it, positive or negative (or mixed, as most reviews here have been so far)?

So far, Penn Says has been great, and I expect it to continue being great until he drops it.

You are SO WRONG! You SUCK-UP!!

(Actually, I'm enjoying it, too ... but it's still way too damn short).

Re:'Penn Says' Exclusive New Unscripted Web Series - 2008/01/20 17:53 I wish Penn would do an hour long podcast once a week. I think he would be able to work that into his schedule. Still, Penn Says is far better than nothing! It's nice to have his twist on current events back.
