Evil magicians - 2007/11/06 17:27 Yet another event that makes me wish Penn still had a radio show.

For one, David Copperfield is being accused of some sexual malfeasance, and apparently he even hired people to seduce (i.e. brow-beat) women over the phone for him, with specific instructions on how to deal with husbands and boyfriends.

And is it any coincidence that VH1's Mystery used to be a magician? What about David Blaine? Are all our wives and girlfriends destined to be taken from us and become a harem for a handful of magicians?

Penn's probably got stories. Stories about stories, even. And even if he didn't go into them, the call-in topics are excellent.

For example, what's the most effort you've gone through to get laid? Hired employees, staked out the lobby of a building to make it look like you were leaving at the same time, etc. Or, which caller has stolen another guy's girlfriend in the most evil way? Sent her boyfriend to jail, maybe? Gotten him fired? Made her gain a bunch of weight so he'd dump her and you could get the rebound?

Re:Evil magicians - 2007/11/06 21:29 It's the ultimate trick, isn't it?

I'm not so certain about the David Copperfield thing. If it was rape, why didn't the woman go to the authorities on the island? Why wait until returning to the U.S.? It's all very murky and I hope it turns out that he is innocent

Re:Evil magicians - 2007/11/07 14:49 Well... I think there's really a few ways to look at that. While its possible she was the type that didnt want it, but couldnt really SAY she didnt want it (and just didnt say she DID.. sort of a "well, i never said you COULD..") then maybe.

As it was pointed out on the Adam Carolla show:

Adam: So.. Theresa, you're alone on an island with a guy who is trying to rape you. How hard would you fight?
Theresa: Oh, I would take an eye.
Adam: So... If you're fighting hard, wouldnt he fight hard back? So why does this chick not have any signs of being in a fight when she goes to the ER?

And wouldnt the girl have the common sense? He's flying her on a private jet... pouring her wine... he MUST be coming on to her.. Did she have NO idea he would try to make the move?

Rape is wrong... But... There are different shades of rape, in a weird way. I mean, this isnt the "My brother had me at gun point, broke a ton of my bones, threatened to kill me, my two kids saw it, and now I'm pregnant." This is the "Well.. I was with this guy, and he kept coming onto me, but he was giving me some expensive wine, and flying me to this gorgeous island.. I wasnt sure I wanted to sleep with him, but man, i wanted to see that island!"

Re:Evil magicians - 2007/11/08 16:30 Well, normal women fight back. But some women, especially abuse victims, have a freeze reaction. It's something that came up on Loveline a lot, and I know Adam brought it up sometime in the last week.

The problem with this is that the guy might mistake the freeze reaction for submission, and think the whole thing was consensual, and his first hint that that might not have been the case is when the police arrest him. That's yet another reason why pushing the sexual agenda forward relentlessly isn't always a good idea. There has to be a little bit of holding back, to see if she's really as willing as she seems.

On the other hand, if he's going through the trouble of hiring telemarketers and flying them out to an island, holding back probably isn't in his vocabulary.

Or got her publicity and money *cough*Kobe*cough*
