Identity has been cancelled - 2007/05/15 05:45 I haven't seen this posted anywhere, but TVSquad has a posting about the upfronts, where networks present their schedule for next year.

http://www.tvsquad.com/2007/05/14/the-upfronts-nbc/

Out: Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, Crossing Jordan, The Black Donnellys, Kidnapped, Andy Barker, P.I., Identity, Raines, 20 Good Years, Grease: You're The One That I Want, The Real Wedding Crashers, Thank God You're Here.

Right in the middle of the mess, with no fanfare, is Identity.

Re:Identity has been cancelled - 2007/05/15 09:30 Now Penn has time to do his radio show again! That's wishful thinking...

Re:Identity has been cancelled - 2007/05/15 15:57 drat. I'll also miss Thank God You're Here. I suppose both shows have the problem of sustainability. They both must have really unbalanced research budgets, in Identity's case for research and booking costs, and in TGYH's case for not only booking celebrities, but building sets that are used only once.

Re:Identity has been cancelled - 2007/05/15 17:30 Awwww, that sucks! Maybe now he'll be freed up for that late-night gig, suck it Conan

Re:Identity has been cancelled - 2007/05/15 21:14 Awww. I'm bummed about this, especially as they never aired the episode where Teller was one of the strangers. Thanks for the heads up, aj.

I'm also going to really miss Raines. Bah!!

Exactly. If Jerry Falwell were here, he'd say Identity failed because Penn left the radio. Well... not really... he'd say:

HOME-OH-SEX-U-ALLS KILLED JEBUS! NOW BRING ME A SAMMICH!

But I do hope that the radio show is brought back. But if the show were brought back, how long would it stay on? A lot of people have gotten uptight about radio recently. I know that Penn wouldn't say anything to purposefully hurt anyone, but ever since "nappy-headed hoes"... Oh well... I just hope we can hear the show again. Sucks about Identity, though. That was a really good concept.

Re:Identity has been cancelled - 2007/05/16 20:41 Given that state of radio today (Imus, Doghouse, Opie and Anthony), maybe Penn saw which way the wind was blowing?

Not necessarily. No one could have seen this stupid shit coming. Besides, he got away with quite a lot for terrestrial radio. I hope the show comes back. I miss my daily dose of Penn and Goudeau.

Re:Identity has been cancelled - 2007/05/17 02:49 Somehow I imagine Penn might have handled it better, perhaps even creatively. What's more, he actually has a gig outside of radio, unlike Imus and Opie and Anthony. Thus, he would have been able to consider strategies that others couldn't. He mentioned very often that the sincere willingness to suddenly walk away gives one great power.

Though, on the other hand, if he had made some mistake on the air, and some Sharptonesque magnate had made him grovel like Imus, he might have lost the respect of much of his true fan base. I can't imagine how it would happen, but I also can't pretend such things aren't possible.

I do know that nobody could have predicted the Imus shitstorm, so that's probably not why Penn left. The reasons given on this site's front page seem plausible enough. If any censorship entered into it, it's probably the chunks they took out of the climax of the blow-dryer story.

Re:Identity has been cancelled - 2007/05/17 11:11 What's the German word for guilty joy? Do they have one for guilty hope? This could be the dictionary definition of "guilty hope".

He should come to Australia to do the radio show. Here he would be allowed to say anything except "cunt". Government funded TripleJ does this regularly.

Re:Identity has been cancelled - 2007/05/18 13:01 I am glad Identity was cancelled because I thought it was a waste of Penn's talents. All he did was stand there and say a few catch-phrases. He's too big of a personality and an intellect to be doing the gameshow thing. For me, nothing beats radio as a forum for what he does so well. Bring back Penn & Goudeau on Free FM !! THAT was entertainment value (no disrespect intended about it being free and all).

Re:Identity has been cancelled - 2007/05/18 13:19 Hey, if they brought it back with a different host, I'd still watch. I'm pretty mind-blind, so I find it amazing to watch people just read other people.
