Didn't occur to anyone that Penn could have Pulled a prank on us? - 2007/03/04 14:06 Hi all,

The show cancellation announcement was on Friday, the "Pull of the Weasel" day.

Wouldn't be like Penn & Mike to pull a good prank on all of us?

Penn simply succumbed to a weasel pulling the bottom of his slacks.

Tune in on Monday!

Re:Didn't occur to anyone that Penn could have Pulled a prank on us? - 2007/03/04 14:27 I think this was too elaborate to be a prank. Radio station websites are reporting that he's closed up shop, his official fansite rep came here and talked about it, the post from Goudeau was deleted...

Too complex of a prank for it to be a hoax.

here are some more straws you may wish to grab at:

there is no possible use for a signature* except to demonstrate how funny/geeky/cynical/pathetic you are.

Re:Didn't occur to anyone that Penn could have Pulled a prank on us? - 2007/03/04 14:56 Sure, but Penn said on several occasions that most people can't imagine to what extent magicians go to pull a good trick.

This prank would not be that difficult to set up. The only people that may need to know are Penn, Mike, the producers and the top guy at CBS. Maybe only Penn & Mike know and that would suffice.

Re:Didn't occur to anyone that Penn could have Pulled a prank on us? - 2007/03/04 15:45 It occurred to me, but I pretty much dismissed that possibility. I don't believe it would be Penn's style to play a prank this big on his listeners. Plus his ratings would drop like a rock when everybody who believes him fails to listen on Monday.

And April Fools is still almost a month away, so he doesn't have that excuse. If we were within a week of April Fools I might suspect that it was a prank.

Plus, the Chicago Tribune has announced that Steve Dahl's son Matt will be replacing Penn on WCKG:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-070302ckg,0,7573100.story?coll=chi-bizfront-hed

Of course, Penn likes to do things differently, so it can be hard to predict what he really would or wouldn't do. So I could be wrong, we could all have been duped.

If that's the case then he really went out of his way to sell it, didn't he? I'll listen in on Monday just to see. Maybe his replacement will be worth listening to anyway

How many of you would be angry if it turns out that he's just pranking us?

Re:Didn't occur to anyone that Penn could have Pulled a prank on us? - 2007/03/04 18:41 Let's review a few facts:

1) Penn is a magician. His job is to trick people.

2) Penn loves doing the radio show.

3) The show gets recorded at his home, while he has his morning donuts and tea. By now, the show is mostly on autopilot. His people do most of the work and he reads 2 hours to prepare. Penn is an avid reader anyway. So basically, the radio show is not a great extra burden.

4) Goudeau's explanation that Penn had to "wind up" for the radio show and "wind down" for the live show seems contrived.

5) There was way too much theatrics on Friday and praise for CBS.

6) Talk radio hosts normally get replaced without fanfare. I've listened to talk radio for 25 years and on at least 3 occasions, the station cold turkey'd us and had a new host Monday morning with no explanation.

7) It's Penn's birthday on Monday. How convenient!

8) Some people with time and money commitments on his show will be upset, but they'll get over it. A good prank is a good prank.

9) They said they would come back, somehow, sometime. Maybe they'll be back early with a smile.

However, I did notice the Rio show is only back on March 13. So he is probably recording Identity for the next 10 days. If the radio show were to continue on Monday, it would have to be recorded in LA.

So, please add more clues. Pranks and conspiracies are fun!

Re:Didn't occur to anyone that Penn could have Pulled a prank on us? - 2007/03/04 19:01 I certainly hope that you're right, gpsengr. But I see your points more as proof that people can come up with a number of "clues" to back up any conspiracy theory.

It's just like the moon landing hoax theory. If you look hard enough at any event, you'll be able to find a whole lot of things that don't add up on first glance.

This comes into play especially when you're analyzing the behavior of the people involved for any discrepancies. The one thing conspiracy theorists fail to realize is that the actions of humans aren't always predictable or logical - and the factors that go into making many of our decisions are often more complicated than they appear at first glance.

Anyway, I went off on a little bit of a tangent there. Just wanted to drive home the point that you really don't have a lot to go on here

We'll find out if you're right or not soon enough though.

Re:Didn't occur to anyone that Penn could have Pulled a prank on us? - 2007/03/04 20:06 yeah... I dont think so gpsengr, there is no plausible reason to play such a joke, combined with the fact that he is working on 2 television shows and does have a live show to worry about. Also the fact that local stations are replacing him, all suggests that this is quite real. Maybe they will come back in a different format, and I hope they do. I suspect it may be at least a few months. We shall see.
Hey, if you want to, you can find a conspiracy in anything. For example, Did you know that twinkies contain an ingredient extracted from petroleum? And the fact that hostess boxes were spotted in the trash of Sheikh Al badar of Dubai? This cannot be a coincidence... there must be more to the story... a hostess twinkies/oil company/arab sheikh conspiracy...

Three hours a day, five days a week, on top of your day job is not a burden? Could I interest you in a caree^H^H^H^H^Hhobby in the exciting field of medical transcription? Most of it involves reading!

4) Goudeau's explanation that Penn had to "wind up" for the radio show and "wind down" for the live show seems contrived.

Okay, let's test your hypothesis. Starting this Monday, sit down with a microphone every day until Friday and record 45 minutes of yourself talking, with the caveat that you can't be boring or say "uh, umm" every five words. Do this BEFORE you go to work every day. Repeat for 14 months.

If you play the Monkey Tuesday theme backwards and half speed, you can hear an eerie voice whispering, "Penn radio is dead. Miss it, miss it."

Re:Didn't occur to anyone that Penn could have Pulled a prank on us? - 2007/03/05 09:12 Alright, I tried to stay out of this, but this is to tempting. You were right, Its a pull of the weasel joke, he started it up about a month ago when Pull of the weasel had just started. The information i posted on here was just to throw you all off, and to give him a ratigns boost, which clearly worked, the admin of this site was in on it all along.

Re:Didn't occur to anyone that Penn could have Pulled a prank on us? - 2007/03/05 09:54 It would be the best prank ever if it where true but I'm not getting my hopes up at all. ANy way I've got about 3-4 months of missed shows to catch up on, if he came back I would never get through them.
