Baseball World Series - WTF??? - 2007/02/23 07:27 Perhaps I am a little slow but what gives with the Baseball World Series? Does not the title "World Series" imply a competition that includes several nations from around the world?

Now I can understand the titles World Cup Soccer, World Cup Cricket and the Rugby World Cup because these all have numerous countries competing in them - not just one country.

Well I have to finish my rant now as the "World Cup Series Australian Rules Football" is just about to start on the TV.

Re:Baseball World Series - WTF??? - 2007/02/23 09:09 That was from pretty much every comedian ever....ever. And yes, we agree. Kind of like the NFL championship. Or the world heavyweight championship for pro wrestling, Its only defended in the US and Canada. If anything the championships should be called the "northwestern hemisphere part of the world championship"

Re:Baseball World Series - WTF??? - 2007/02/23 20:59 Is there only one Canadian team? They have talked about doing an actual world series that involves many nations but negotiations keep breaking down.

Re:Baseball World Series - WTF??? - 2007/02/24 00:22 During Spring training last year they had the "world baseball classic" which was MLB's attempt to expand baseball's world appeal and their attempt at a "baseball world cup". Each country submitted a team. The final was between Japan and Cuba, Japan won. MLB used to have two canadian teams, one in toronto and another in montreal, but the montreal team moved to washington DC. Of course, the whole "world series" thing was really started almost 100 years ago, when for all intents and purposes, it was the "world series" as most people playing baseball in other countries (with the exception of japan) were american expatriates. Ultimately, they are just meaningless words. The national hockey league actually spans two countries, who cares. So, world series, whatever. I think that is about all the baseball I can take for now.

Re:Baseball World Series - WTF??? - 2007/02/24 00:40 Actually you guys in the US should do more to increase national interest in cricket over there. There are already several international competitions running and the US did compete in the last Cricket World Cup. So they did not do so well but even if cricket was given a fraction of the support that baseball gets, the US could become competative at the international level.
