Is Stephen Colbert an atheist? - 2007/02/14 00:23 I'm sure Penn mentioned he was, but no one fricken believes me... have I got this wrong? What day did Penn talk about this?

Re:Is Stephen Colbert an atheist? - 2007/02/14 00:28 I think that there was something about him kissing Penn. I think that he is Catholic, but he is very liberal and borders on atheism? I honestly do not know, as it is rather difficult (for me) to find anything about him without his 'Stephen Colbert' persona.

Re:Is Stephen Colbert an atheist? - 2007/02/14 00:58 I just don't see how his satirical character would be effective if he really was a Christian....

Re:Is Stephen Colbert an atheist? - 2007/02/14 03:07 Steven Colbert is, in fact, religious. He is a Catholic who regularly attends church. He even teaches Sunday school, which is absolutely insane.

I think he talks about the subject in this NPR interview as well.

60 minutes did a great segment on Steven Colbert that, if I remember correctly, talks about his faith as well. You can watch it here. I might be wrong about that, but it is hilarious and worth watching anyway.

Re:Is Stephen Colbert an atheist? - 2007/02/14 10:52 Great link, Gabe. I was surprised to learn he was a practicing Catholic, but I used to be too.

Here are the 2 key points from the interview...

Colbert: I'm not a particularly religious person. I do go to church, which makes me kind of odd for my profession. Most people can't understand why I do, other comedians, and um, I have to walk a thin line because I don't want to criticize anyone's religion for the fact that it is a religion. What's funny to me is what people do in the name of religion.

Later in the interview...

Gross: Was it (your family growing up) a religious family? You say that you go to church...

Colbert: Oh, absolutely. We were very devout, and I still go to church, and my children are being raised in the Catholic church - I was actually my daughter's Cathecist last year for first communion - which was a great opportunity to speak very simply and plainly about your faith without anybody saying "Yeah, but do you believe that stuff?" which happens a lot in what I do.

Re:Is Stephen Colbert an atheist? - 2007/02/14 19:12 Penn and dawkins talked about it when dawkins was on, because they were both on colbert around the same time. dawkins said something to the effect that he belived he was a cultural catholic ( since he claims to be catholic) , but that colbert seems too smart not to be an atheist.

Re:Is Stephen Colbert an atheist? - 2007/02/14 22:01 I think Stephen is like my friend Blade, he's a CiNO (Catholic in Name Only). He may believe some of the stuff, but he doesn't take it all at face value.

And to the person that implies atheists are smart... not all of them. Stroll through some of the myspace atheist groups. They are the most retarded fuckin' people since the Special Olympics was founded. Not the Rational Response Squad, though. I like them. I meant some other group. I can't even remember what they're called. It was something simple and obvious, though... Anyway, I was there when I first started coming out to people as an atheist. I asked questions about things and got no real answers. Myspace is truly the asshole of the internet. Myspace is the Middle East of the internet.

Now what were we talking about again? Vagina wallets? Yes... The clasp that opens it is where the clitoris is and...
