Re:Door-to-door Atheists - 2007/02/25 05:17 The guy in the video is John Safran who has become a bit of a cult icon in Australia.

He started out in a series called 'Race Around the World' where a bunch of young people were given video cameras, travelled to various places around the world and sent back 5 minute docos each week. The docos were voted on and the winner got a film school scholarship.

John did OK in this series with the public but the judges were not so taken with his wacky sense of humour eg: kicking his football into no-mans land between Israel and Lebanon and asking the guards if he can get it. He also placed a little Sadam doll in the Disney Small World ride after noticing no Iraqi dolls there.

After this he gained infamey with an unaired TV pilot where he used the same in the face tactics reporters on 'A Current Affair' use on 'A Current Affairs' anchor, Ray Martin. You know the sort of thing, hanging around outsides Ray's house, going through his garbage and shoving a camera in his face. Ray made a phonecall to John's boss and the series was cancelled.

Not long after the government funded SBS (Special Broadcasting Service) took him on for the series 'John Safran's Music Jamboree' where he poked fun at music and religion.

A year or so later he was back with 'John Safran Versus God' which the above clip is from. In this series he met Catholic Priest Father Bob Maguire and the two now do a radio program on the government funded youth radio network TripleJ (where they are allowed to say bullshit, fuck, prick, etc).

Last year he also had a show on SBS with Father Bob called 'Speaking in Tongues'.

I recommend doing a search on YouTube for John Safran and watching his videos are they are very funny.

Re:Door-to-door Atheists - 2007/02/25 16:07 I love Speaking in Tongues. The SBS even released it free via pod-/vid-cast. No word on a new season, eh? I think the only one I saw ended at the beginning of 2006. I loved it and JS vs. God.

You are probably right, I think they were just repeats last year. I would not discount John doing something new on TV as his previous programs tended to just appear without much fanfare. You can get him on DVD:

Re:Door-to-door Atheists - 2007/03/07 00:28 I have recently added the first 8 videos by John Safran he did for Race Around the World to YouTube. I will be adding the last couple over the next few weeks. You can see them by clicking here: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=race+around+world+safran&search=Search
