FreeFM stations dropping like flies - 2007/06/22 20:14
Here's something that puts a damper on my hopes for Penn's return to radio: CBS seems to be abandoning the FM talk format.
FreeFM's New York station changed formats a month ago. And just yesterday, on our fine summer solstice, KZON 101.5 in Phoenix ended its talk format, and will be returning as a hip-hop station as rumor has it.
In the meantime, they started an amusing stunt format. At 5:00pm on June 21, when millions of pick-up artists were tuning into 101.5 expecting to hear their weekly Leykis 101 sermon, they instead heard Ronaldo the flaming intern lock himself in the studio, rename the station "Free Paris", and start playing Paris Hilton songs continuously, ostentibly while a "mean bald man" banged on the door, imploring him to shut up. If you go to the 101.5 website, the old FreeFM graphics have a pink "FREE PARIS" stencil spray-painted over them, and clicking anywhere leads to the online petition to be sent to Arnold Schwarzenegger.
As stunt formats go, I wish someone would try KSTD, the station that plays nothing but REM's "Stand". Here's the rest of that cartoon: part 2, 3.
