Re:Why cant the show just continue to be podcast ? - 2007/03/05 05:15
While Penn might do the radio show for free, this doesn't translate to a podcast. If the show is on the radio, it works as a promotional tool for his Rio show (and Bullshit). Podcasts are a really, really tiny niche, and the podcast audience would consist primarily of pre-existing Penn or P&T fans.
I'm sure he'd enjoy making the show regardless of who listens, but you have to factor in the reality of performing at the Rio nightly, plus Identity, plus the fact that he's got a family. Producing a radio show or podcast isn't just a matter of setting aside an hour a day and just yammering on about whatever - it would eat into anyone's schedule. The radio show had a contractual obligation to produce a show five days a week. There was a quid pro quo between CBS involving cash money and more importantly, promotion for P&T.
What if you don't feel like making free ice cream for everyone this particular week - okay, you don't. So the Penn Jillette podcast becomes like 99% of podcasts - sporadic and unpredictable. Who among us would pay for podcasts like Skepticality, which (for understandable reasons) stopped making new shows, then returned, then went dead for six months, and is now airing "I've got an iRiver in my pocket" interviews from TAM? Even putting the money issue aside, I get the feeling Penn wouldn't like his name on something half-assed.
Basically, asking Penn to do a podcast is asking him to get a hobby that we can all play along with. While your average podcaster does a show because he/she wants a soapbox or just does it for fun, Penn's already got a soapbox (BS) and, no offense to podcasters, I'm sure he can find more entertaining things to do with his spare time than post mp3s on the Internet.
Now, Goudeau should totally do a podcast. Forget everything I said above, Goudeau should do a podcast. Or a blog. Or just come shoot the shit with us here. I promise to buy a BBQ cover.
