Re:Second Hand Smoke Correction - 2007/03/15 22:56 I think that has been posted here before by somebody else. I don't remember Penn correcting himself in any episode of Bullshit, does anybody know which episode that was?

In any case, I wish I knew what study they were referring to in that video. I'd kind of like to know the details for myself. Whatever the study, it seems to have convinced Penn, as he mentioned in one of his radio shows.

I sent that link to Dave Hitt, a podcaster who is critical of the anti-smoking movement, and asked him what he thought of it. This was his response:

I love P&T, and they're right most of the time. But if Penn has bought
into the SHS myth (and he was couching his words there) then that's one
of the few things he's wrong on.

I don't know which study that was - there's *always* another study, and
many of them, like the SGs report, are nothing more than rehashes of
previous studies.

The bottom line is that SHS is so diluted by the time it gets to a
non-smokers lungs, the dose is so low, that it's harmless. And that's a
fact that most studies never even acknowledge.

I'm not sure that a rehashing would have convinced Penn, he made the point in the smoking episode that most studies were just rehashing old data (I believe the term is "meta study").

Maybe I should dig a little deeper on this...

Re:Second Hand Smoke Correction - 2007/03/16 07:19 I think Teller was on the Skeptic's Guide podcast and mentioned the second hand smoke one and the obesity ep and noted they are in need of correction. There was a suggestion about doing a BS show on the BS of BS.

Re:Second Hand Smoke Correction - 2007/03/16 19:36 This is why I love people like P&T. Most of the people they attack in their show would never have the decency to come clean when new facts roll in. But, P&T know what science really is, and few things are more liberating in the science community than to have the opportunity to be proven wrong.

I don't suspect we'll be getting any kinds of corrections/retractions from Michael Moore any time soon.

Re:Second Hand Smoke Correction - 2007/03/16 19:57 A BS of BS episode would be great. Mythbusters does a similar thing every season (they re-open and re-test myths that had controversial results), and they are usually the best episodes.

Re:Second Hand Smoke Correction - 2007/03/17 03:59 Regardless of what second hand smoke actually does to people, there should still not be laws banning smoking on private property. I haven't seen that episode for a while, but I thought I remembered them arguing more from the freedom side than the scientific point that it isn't as harmful as you think.
