Cover-Up Your Arisotcrats DVD Cover - 2006/03/21 15:44Penn spoke on the radio about how much he detests the Aristocrats DVD cover. So much so that he puts a sticker over the ones he sells at his show.
Not to disrespect Penn's taste, but a bright red sticker doesn't sound that pleasant to me either. So I took on the task of making a cover that could be used to cover up the original cover. It could be simply printed out, trimmed to size, and placed in the DVD case over the original cover.
I sent the file to pennradio@gmail.com for Penn's opinion but I never got a reply. Don't know if that's because he hates it, or if it's just lost in a bunch of other emails.
This is what I came up with. I've attached the full resolution PDF for anyone that wants to print it out.
Let me know what you think.

Re:Cover-Up Your Arisotcrats DVD Cover - 2006/03/21 19:57Me!
I'm not at EA anymore, working on my own project... it's nothing super special but it's enough that I think a few hundred thousand people will appreciate it and some of those will buy so the economics justify my time. Just doing the interface and rendering code as of late but I plan to have an early playable version ready sometime this summer.
BTW:
What format did you send that cover in?
Perhaps they skipped it if it was PDF and too big?

Re:Cover-Up Your Arisotcrats DVD Cover - 2006/03/21 20:18Cybororganics, checked out your site, nice models. I happened upon your CV, and saw you were in Air Cadets, way back. So was I: 292 here in Halifax. Did you do glider, if so, what year? I myself went the Leadership way, and did SLC in...gosh... 1990, I think. Then headed to Europe on Exchange the next year. Lot's of my buddies did do Glider and Power, though.
Anyways, yeah, I have too much time on my hands. And it's always fun to think back to the old days.

Re:Cover-Up Your Arisotcrats DVD Cover - 2006/03/21 20:20It's good to hear you are doing something different. I think things can get quite stagnant if you stay still too long. I hope it works out well for you.
Personally, I left the games industry to come over to the States and get married to my long-time long-distance girlfriend. Since that point I've had a hard time finding work since there is nothing in the local area, and I'm just not cut out for freelance. When she's finished college, I have a few people back in England who are interested in having me work for them.
About the email, I did attach the PDF, but I had the JPEG in the actual email. It's a gmail account that they use, so I didn't think it would have an issue with attachment size.
Just my luck. I post some graphics up on a non-graphics board, and along comes a fellow graphics guy to see all the sloppiness in my work.

Re:Cover-Up Your Arisotcrats DVD Cover - 2006/03/21 20:26Well, Daz, I'm a fan. Might have to wait until Provenza or Gottfried are back on the show, so they can tie it in as topical. Not that they necessarily adhere to that!

Re:Cover-Up Your Arisotcrats DVD Cover - 2006/03/21 21:29Chalmers, Thanks! That online portfolio is a few years out of date but I'm still so happy to get adulations for the effort . It's funny how I get more satisfaction from the demostration work and sharing it than I do from my recent work on NFS: underground 2 and Most Wanted.
But yeah, I was in 110 and 151 Lloyd Chadburn. I was awarded a flight scholarship in ~89 (I think). Darn, I really have forgotten WHEN I was at CFB Trenton, it was as long time ago. I miss flying so very much, I should make the effort and time to get back into it.
But as for Daz's design I think you might have a thought, Chalmers. That or Penn really does just hate it... he seems to have specific ideas on what works and what doesn't. Myself, I'd go with a LOT of pictures of the comics in Artistocrats. As I see it, the right faces and names can boost sales dramatically if placed right but I wonder what the extra costs for those rights would be?
For instance, as soon as I heard George Carlin was in artistocrats I was out the door to get it. Penn is so right about the dog too, I completely passed over the DVD BECAUSE of the damn dog. It was a poor concept but having said that, I *think* I can guess what the designer might have been thinking: subtextual beastiality perhaps?
Also, I agree that the season 2 DVD of BS looks needy but I can understand how it appeals to folks today, sadly. Maybe the next season's design will be a big bright neon green cover with purple lettering and glittering lines and embossed printing? Oh, why not just put blinking LED lights or use glow in the dark inks to make it good and ugly but as shocking as possible, huh? Hehe, crazy commercial artists... they're an insane lot.
I think they would do well to consider just putting BS3 on a 30' angle covering the entire fornt cover with Penn and Teller's faces faded in from each open corner. But I'm digressing now.
Daz, where is 'the local area' now for you now exactly? And for how long have you been in North America? Sorry to hear that the job front has been a pain.

Re:Cover-Up Your Arisotcrats DVD Cover - 2006/03/21 22:21The local area I refer to is Maine. There's nothing going on up here at all for someone with my experience. I have to change career or move. I've been here for 2 1/2 years now. It'll be at least the end of this year before I have an opportunity to move on.
I thought Penn would actually like the DVD cover I did as he said he really likes the CD cover, which is essentially the same concept. I just tried to make it look more like an authentic antique leather bound book, so it woudlnt' look out of place next to his collection of bibles.
Anyway, I did ask them to be brutally honest about it, so the fact that I didn't get any reply, good or bad, isn't a good sign. I don't want to keep emailing as if they have got the previous emails then I just come across as a stalker. And I might be blind to just how bad it really is and they are just trying to be nice by just not saying anything at all.
Sucks to be me.

Re:Cover-Up Your Arisotcrats DVD Cover - 2006/03/22 15:14Ah don't worry about it Daz, I'm sure it's not that bad. They're probably just busy. In anycase, you're effort are appreciated here and I have no doubt that they also appreciate the effort too.
and I see what you mean by Maine's lack of entertainment dev biz:

Re:Cover-Up Your Arisotcrats DVD Cover - 2006/03/23 14:22Great and beautiful cover -- but can you correct the spelling so that "OBSCENITY" is spelled correctly? (It currently lacks a "c")
That would make it even MORE beautiful!

Re:Cover-Up Your Arisotcrats DVD Cover - 2006/03/23 16:38Thank you so much for spotting that. I totally missed it.
I also though it could do with the full tagline. "No Nudity, No Violence, Unspeakable Obscenity"
I couldn't edit the attachments in the above post, so my embarrassment is there to haunt me forever, but here you go:
